Course content
Various computing paradigms have emerged in today’s data and IT dependent environment to tackle and address some of the various problems currently being faced. This summer school will explore in detail the various emerging paradigms and explain some of the important concepts that are used to work with them. Two broad areas that will be covered are (a) the background details that include a standalone discussion on each emerging paradigm and (b) the intersecting boundaries of each paradigm and how can they be applied to gain leverage in solving some of the complex problems being faced. Set in the research focussed environment of Malaysian Government’s ICT arm, MIMOS; the school will provide a stimulating environment for the participants that will enhance their learning environment. It will also provide opportunities for the participants to increase their knowledge, form collaborations with either similar or complementary research areas of others, brainstorm some of the current challenges they are facing in their work environment with some of the leading experts in the field and gain insights on how to work in the intersecting boundaries of different IT areas and apply cross disciplinary techniques to address some of the current challenges being faced by them.
Course structure
The summer school is sponsored by the Technical Committee 12 of International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). IFIP represents IT Societies from 56 countries or regions, covering all 5 continents with a total membership of over half a million. It also links more than 3500 scientists from Academia and Industry, organized in more than 101 Working Groups reporting to 13 Technical Committees. IFIP sees summer school as a very important activity of returning something back to the rank and file organization members. The idea behind the summer school is to expose IT professionals, Academics and students in the region to the latest wave of IT.
The summer school will be held over a period of two days and will comprise of tutorials on Security, Cyber Physical Systems, Semantics, Cloud Computing and Big Data. The language of instruction of all discussions will be English. School participants will be invited to contribute to the discussions by presenting their own work in the form of posters and carry out either group or one-to-one discussions with the presenters. At the end of each day’s tutorials there will be panel discussion among the presenters and participants that will help to transition between the theoretical aspects of learning to the practical application in various areas. Each day will finish off with a social event that will assist the participants to carry out discussions specific to their problems they are facing with the presenters. The school also provides doctoral students with an excellent environment to either develop their own research or to build connections with other researchers.
